Mom's parents

The photo is of my grandparents on their 50th wedding anniversary. Behind them is a set of pictures taken on their wedding day. Grandad is handsome in his cookieduster mustache, and Grandma has a very prim Gibson girl look. She was about four years older than he was, and he lied about his age to make up for it. There are many stories about Grandad, who was a bit of a loose cannon. One of my favorites is the time he bought some mules and paid for them with a rubber check. The sellers got unhappy about that, kidnapped Grandma, my mom, and my uncle Nate and held them till Grandad came up with the cash. I guess they thought the courts were too slow. Grandma was small but a real pepperpot, and I think she made her kidnappers sorry they every messed with her. Apparently, she gave them a tonguelashing the entire time they had her. And it wasn't politically correct, either.

Grandma and Grandpa's 50th wedding anniversary was in 1953 or 1954. I don't have any family records handy, so I can't look it up. But, I remember mother earned money to fly outside to the celebration by working in the potato harvest. She was gone for a month. I was in seventh grade, I think. I did a pretty good job of cooking and doing the wash, but I had a closetful of ironing waiting for Mom to come home.

Grandma and Grandpa went somewhere on the train to be married away from Engle. She was 28 when she married, and since she was married the first time at 13 and had her first child at 14, she had half-grown children. Clara, the oldest, may already have married her first husband. He was killed by lightning. Anna, a few years younger than Clara, was raised the next few years, after Grandma married Grandpa, by Mammy and Pappy Hickock. They sent her back to Missouri to boarding school. She married young, too.
