Mother Used to Recite "Lasca"

Click here to go to one of my other blogs to see a copy of the poem in mother's handwriting and read the entire poem.

I kind of sniffled when I read "Laska." Mom liked poetry that was fun and dramatic do declaim. I remember that she would read to us in bed. Two of her favorites were "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," and "The Highwayman." These two and "Laska" have at least one thing in common: they are great fun to read aloud, and you can really put yourself into them, which Mom did. Both "Laska" and "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" also have lots of internal rhyme. I wonder if that's why I like the poetry of Robert Service so much? Because of what my Momma read to me.
